What does a residency advisor do?

A residency advisor guides you through every strategic decision in the Match, from building your program list and positioning your ERAS application to preparing for interviews and finalizing your rank order. At MedEdits, that means strengthening how you present your candidacy across your personal statement, experiences and scholarly works, program signaling, geographic preferences, and interviews. Because the ERAS application changes often, including the new scholarly works section debuting for the 2027 Match, a good advisor also keeps you current on how programs are actually evaluating applicants.

Is a residency advisor worth it?

The value comes down to how competitive your specialty is and how much is riding on a successful Match. Not matching, or matching outside your chosen specialty, can cost you a year or redirect your career, so many applicants find expert guidance pays for itself. Of the students who work with us comprehensively, 95% match in the specialty of their choice, and most match at one of their top three programs. Advising is most worthwhile when you engage early enough to act on the guidance rather than react to it.

How much does residency match advising cost?

Our residency packages start at $1,950 for editing only and scale up based on how comprehensive the support is and whether you work with an Assistant Professor or Professor level advisor. Comprehensive packages include everything from program list strategy and mock interviews to unlimited editing of your personal statement and experiences. When should I start working with a residency advisor?

The earlier the better. Ideally you begin before or early in your application year, while you can still shape decisions like away rotations, letters of recommendation, and your program list. We do work with applicants at later stages, including during interview season and for reapplications, but starting early gives you the most room to strengthen your candidacy.

Who will I work with at MedEdits?

You will work with a physician advisor who has served on residency match committees, not a current medical student. All of our advisors are accomplished physicians in their fields and published academic authors, and many hold our Professor level distinction with a minimum of ten years in medical admissions and advising. This is a deliberate difference from services that pair you with a peer who can only share their own recent experience.

Can you help with competitive specialties?

Yes. Our students match into a wide range of specialties, including competitive ones like orthopaedic surgery, dermatology, ENT, radiation oncology, and ophthalmology, as well as internal medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, anesthesiology, pediatrics, OB/GYN, and radiology. For competitive fields, strategy around signaling, your program list, and away rotations matters even more, which is where experienced guidance makes the biggest difference.
